And I must say that 3 things are good in Lincoln: squirrels, rabbits and raccoons. I see squirrels all the time (almost fell once when I was looking at a tree), rabbits and raccoons I only saw once. But this last one was so funny.

Okinawa (Japan) 2009

Some of you know that last week I went to a conference about chemosynthesis-based environments, in Japan, more precisely in Okinawa island. :D I wont make a thorough description of my journey... I'll present only some pics with some titles and commentaries. When we will see each other again, I'll tell you the details (and there are so many!). ;) But in a few words I can say that Okinawa is very green (don't say... it's tropical!!!), nevertheless you can see lots of garbage on the road margins, cars are cubic (it's so funny!), buildings are ugly (2nd world war products), people are very nice, even if they do not speak english (always bowing), food is great (nham nham!!!), water TºC is awesome, surrounding island have beautiful beaches. And much more that I didn't see or that I can't tell through a post. Just go and see. :D

P.S.- I lost my mobile phone, so don't try to contact me until I send you the new number... (the only upset from this trip!)

Alguns entre vocês sabem que sigo o site do Público sobre as cegonhas. De vez em quando comento sobre o que vejo, num local apropriado, a que vulgarmente se chama o "comentadoiro" (no mesmo site). Outro dia, vendo que já não era a primeira vez, nem a primeira pessoa, fiz um comentário ao um Zé do Porto que escrevia sempre em maiúsculas. Disse-lhe que seria mais agradável se as pessoas deixassem de o fazer, pois na internet, as maiúsculas tomam a forma de falar alto ou gritar. Usei a frase: "Seria bom que deixassem de usar maiúsculas...", querendo assim não atingir forçosamente o sr. Zé, pois já outras pessoas o tinham feito. Hoje, num comentário que fiz, usei a palavra "tava" em vez de "estava". Vai na volta o sr. Zé dirigi-me o seguinte comentário:

"Srº Roscoff,parece-me mais grave escrever "tava" em vez de estava que escrever com maiúsculas, atendendo a que há gente que está a aprender a escrever "Potruguês" e visita este sítio (alunos de Escolas Básicas). Ou será, que para si, a linguagem net permite assassinar a nossa língua?"

Eu respondo-lhe:

Sr. Zé, o meu nome é Joana e não Roscoff. Roscoff é o sítio onde vivo. Quanto ao erro, é certo que não o devia ter feito. Aconteceu. Devia ter tomado mais atenção. E esta não é linguagem net, é transcrição da linguagem falada. Com as pressas comemos o "es" da palavra "estava", como deve saber. Em linguagem net ou de sms simplesmente escreveria "tv". Eu não quero assassinar língua nenhuma. Portanto, não me acuse desse modo, que eu até não fui muito contundente no meu comentário sobre escrever em maiúsculas. Por essa razão o tom do seu comentário parece-me mais uma forma de me afrontar, do que demonstrar realmente uma preocupação sobre as crianças que visitam o site. Se tudo correr bem, essas mesmas crianças terão pais e professores para lhe dizerem como se escreve correctamente. Se tudo correr mal, não me meta as culpas em cima se a geração vindoura escrever mal e porcamente. A internet é de todos! E como tal há muita informação que não se deve tomar em conta. Não é um "tava", num comentário, num site (ou o sítio, se preferir) sobre cegonhas que vai assassinar a língua portuguesa. Pior será o acordo ortográfico... mas nessas andanças não me quero meter. Resumindo, penso que o Sr. teve uma reacção um pouco descabida, dando mesmo a entender que eu poderia não me importar com a minha língua. Não sei se acompanha o site desde o início, mas as questões de ortografia já chatearam muita gente e provocaram muitos insultos. Por isso lhe respondo fora do WebCegonhas. Sem mais assunto, desejo-lhe boas observações.

... e adorei! Nunca pensei que os furões pudessem ser tão queridos. O cheiro é que é pior, mas passa, se lhe derem banho. São mais pequenos que os gatos, mas mais apegados ao dono. Ele pode não ser muito importante, mas das poucas fotos que o site da NATO tem disponíveis sobre o jantar de acolhimento (ontem), que precedeu a famosa reunião de hoje, a de José Sócrates Carvalho Pinto de Sousa (!) aparece! E por muito que isso não console muitos portugueses, é sempre bom ver que ele é maior que o Sarkozy (que tem um ego maior que o mundo), que visivelmente só gosta que uma pessoa seja maior que ele, a sua Carlita... :P / He might not be very important, but from the fewest photos that are available on the NATO website about the welcome dinner (yesterday), before the today's famouse meeting, the one from José Sócrates Carvalho Pinto de Sousa (!) is there! Does anyone knows what is Burkina Faso? I didn't until yesterday that I went to assist a mini show, done by a "chanteur engagé" or what we would call in portuguese "cantor de intervenção", Sams’K le jah. The name Burkina Faso means the country of the respectful men and is situated in the Africa's belly. Nice name for a country. The problem is that not all are so respectful, mainly the ones in the power (I think that happens a lot...). So lthere is many problems with the people basic rights, like health and education. But, according to the singer, it's not only bad things, apparently the Nature there is breath taking. It was very pleasant to be present, and see that even with so many necessities, people from there keep their smile and don't give up. Very nice! O jornal Público, mostra em directo o produto de um projecto de uma parceria entre diversas entidades em que a REN e a FCCN são as principais (Cegonhas na WEB). Até aqui tudo bem. O site em questão está muito engraçado, com um casal de cegonhas a representar o verdadeiro, que se apresenta no meio da página, ao vivo e, com óptima qualidade. O nome dela é Bia e o dele é Sebastião. O problema chega quando nos pomos a ler os comentários... Há de tudo meus amigos e vou tentar fazer uma mini-compilação. Se vocês se riem tanto como eu, ou se choram de decepção, porque os portugueses são muito tótós, (e fazem erros de ortografia que nem o acordo os salva!), então eu não estou assim tão maluca: Aqui vai (por ordem de postagem no site): 1."Gostes muito desta ideia por mim podia aver mias coisas destas!! gostava que me mandasem um mail se ouvir novidades como estas!! bgg"(este não sabe escrever, nem sabe se vê ou se ouve).;2. "o ovo???? o pai??? deixem mensagens" (este aterrou não sei de onde e não perde tempo a ler os comentários anteriores, dá muito trabalho...); 3. "Oh Cegonha, vai comer qualquer coisa!" (esta manda a cegonha comer, a cegonha ouve tão bem, tão bem, que até te ouve da tua casa!); 4. "as cegonhas são mesmo bonitas e quando digo bonitas nao é só por fora mas tambem por dentro. E nós pensamos que somos os unicos com inteligencia é mentira porque esta cegonha arranja a casa...etc e ficam juntos para o resto da vida e ainda por cima ficam juntas para o resto da vida" (este devia tar bêbado... eu arrumo a casa, logo sou inteligente, eu sou monogâmica portanto sou inteligente... sinceramente não percebo a lógica); 5. "Desde que a encontrei o mundo parece ter parado à minha volta. A serenidade que esta minha amiguinha me envia faz-me sentir "mais limpa", por parecer-me que andamos todos um pouco "sujos". E que tal tentarmos viver assim nesta simplicidade de "respirar"?" (este tá com problemas de limpeza... se calhar se não fizesse tanto lixo como ser humano, ficava melhor, e depois o que é "nesta simplicidade de respirar"???); 6. "a cegonha e muito vaidosa até se vira para a camêra" (talvez!, se ela soubesse o que é uma câmera); 7. "Parece ter força, de acordo com os comentários e do que observei , que a femea não está a permitir a entrada do macho no ninho. Esperemos que seja isto, e tranquilize quem teme pelo paradeiro do macho." (sim, esperemos, porque se coitadinho do macho morrer, Portugal vai ao fundo. Só porque se vê um casal de cegonhas na tv já nos preocupamos, mas o que não vemos, nem sequer pensamos nisso... povo d'um raio!); 8. "Cambada de voyeurs. Não se sentem mal a invadir a privacidade da cegonha? Gostavam de ter uma câmara em vossas casas a transmitir para a internet?" (pá, tás a ver, a cegonha sente-se mta mal se alguém vêm pela guarita e tal a filmar a sua "privacidade"! Por amor à vossa inteligência, deixem-se de comentários parvos!); 9. "..estou a ficar preocupada, pois vejo que a "Bia" já ha muito está sozinha..:( alguem me diz o k se passa!..onde anda o Sebastião?" (Ai nossa sra, coitadinha da bicha que sofre de isolamento...); 10. "Veem-se ao longe outras cegonhas que tentam ocupar o ninho. Esta cegonha residente não se deve ter alimentado o que é preocupante. Há pouco , quando se levantou vi que ainda não havia ovo. Será que estas observações estão toalmente correctas?" (sim, estou preocupadíssima, que uma cegonha no mundo ainda não comeu nada hoje!!!); e o último, pois tenho mais coisas para fazer: 11. "E uma vergonha o k estão a fazer com dinheiros publicos... tanto falam em crise, dizem tão mal dos nosso sistema financeiro e gastam rios de dinheiro a observar cegonhas???? Familias inteiras a passar fome, pessoas carenciadas e com falta do basico, sem falar de instituições voluntarias com grandes dificuldades e gasta-se dinheiro a postar o k fazem as cegonhas e não so 24 horas por dia?? tenham vergonha... o iluminado desta ideia qe tenha vergonha, que faça uma petição para tirar do ar este atentado... deixem as cegonhas viver em paz, ajudem a poupar o nosso planeta com outras acções e deixem-se destas atitudes... e mais, alguem esta a pagar a esta pobre cegonha para que ela sirva de deleite para os vossos olhos, tipo Big Brother??? é mesmo uma tristeza..." (Sim! Sim! Vergonha total à tua ignorância...). Tudo isto para mostrar a falta de conhecimento do nosso povo (e povos em geral) sobre a fauna que o circunda (vergonha!, devem saber mais sobre os pinguins do que de cegonhas...), o calibre dos erros ortográficos, a mania de pôr sentimentos humanos a animais e a parte fatídica... se algo não está como sempre esteve é porque algo correu mal! Convido-os visitarem o site, que aliás acho muito positivo. As pessoas que o frequentam é que são tótós! E preguiçosos! Fazem n vezes a mesma pergunta. Cansei! E depois perguntam porque é que Portugal não avança. Se com uma pequenina coisa já se vê a inércia e a desinformação então como será com projectos maiores.

A long time ago, (only the 12th of this month, portanto à bué bué da tempo atrás) me and some girls (and a boy!), we went to Brest (say it with the french accent, otherwise it sounds awkward) to celebrate one of the girls birthday. So we decided to eat potatoes, in a place that is called "Amour de Pomme de Terre"!!! A little bit expensive, but veryyyyyy goooooood!!!! Huge plates with a great amount of food. Afterwards we went to dar um pézinho de dança, or in english, to dance. Salsa! We didn't stay long since it was a thursday. Anyway, I had a "nice" surprise when I got to my car... the left mirror was broken... Stupid drunk people! All of them should go to prison! My poor car...

My car battery was dead... Fortunately it was only that, 'cause I thought it could be the starting engine. But no. :) The kind of get around that I use the car for, kills the battery. Almost just for shopping. Well, know I'll have an excuse to go further and driiiiveee, and polutteee (this last one really is not good!). So, me and Constance we changed the thing! The stupid battery played the hard to get, but we did it!!! :D The new one is in place. Ah, ça fait plaisir entendre la voiture demarrer sans problèmes. Finally I celebrated Carnaval this year! Since I came to Roscoff, aka the "end of the world", I didn't celebrate Carnaval. There is a soirée in the middle of April that resembles, but it's not the same spirit and it's not at the right time. So, this year was nice. The brazialian music was not present, but the ambiance was agréable. We had a little bit of everything: clowns, a flower, wizards, a cowgirl, a ladybug, ninjas and other japonese "things", guys as girls and girls as guys, a vampire and indeterminated characteres. We ate, we played, we danced and other practised marcial arts (crazy guys, still in puberty...). Hope to have more next year! :)

Há uns dias atrás fiz doce de tomate... não é maravilhoso! Tomato jam, nothing better in the world, if we're talking about jams. Provei também doce de tomate verde, mas não é tão bom. Green tomato jam it's not so good, probably because of the colour?!?!?! (Benfica! LOL)

Tou desejosa de férias de Natal, isto explica-se porque entrei ao trabalho a 14 de Agosto, e porque tenho tanto trabalho que não sei para onde me virar. Preferia estar na cozinha a fazer bolinhos de natal e a enfeitar a casa. Claro que depois fartava-me, porque ainda falta quase 2 meses. Isto é sou o desejo de não ter que fazer tudo o que tenho que fazer. So, with so many work to do I have to wait a little bit longer for the Christmas cookies and Christmas spirit.

Hoje é o nosso dia. É o dia da terra onde nascemos. Hoje andei a vasculhar em livros que iriam ter como destino o lixo, e achei 3 volumes do Arquivo Bocage (arquivos da antiga Universidade de Lisboa) e fiquei toda contente! Para quem está fora, uma das coisas mais doces é voltar a ler a língua mãe. Hoje apetecia-me estar nestas esteiras à sombra de uma figueira e de uma oliveira, no meio do Alentejo. Hoje sou portuguesa, como todos os outros dias. Neste mundo de globalização, há ainda muita coisa que nos distingue. Hoje apetece-me comer sardinhas com salada de pimentos. Morar no estrangeiro faz-me gostar de sardinhas. Morar no estrangeiro também me faz ver que Portugal tem muitos defeitos, mas que também têm coisas boas que devemos preservar. Hoje tenho saudades...

This weekend I went to the south of Britanny to do Acrobranche. Basically is to try to be a Tarzan (in my case, Jane) but with security straps (fortunately!!!). I don't have photos yet, but just to give you a glimpse of what I have done, here is a video taken by someone in the cyberspace, in the same park (Forêt Adrénaline):

I've done only two trails, one of 2nd level medium and one 1st level hard, which means I started not with the easiest one, but still I didn't do the hardest one. Fortunately I didn't do the hardest one, because my arms were dead at the end of the 2nd trail. Very good! Lots of adrenaline! But now every time I move an arm I say bad words... they ache like hell.

Long weekend in Paris

Here in France the 8th and the 12th of May were holidays. Oh... what a pity... So I catch the train and visit Paris for 5 days (more or less) and tried to see not ordinary tourist stuff. :)

What did I see, what did I do? Well, lets see if I remember... Thursday: special morning in a special place; supermarket were I bought "marmelada" and "atum Bom Petisco" and I just left the place feeling the most happy person in the world, knowing that I could eat "MY" food; after lunch visit to the Vincennes castle and the Floral Park from Paris (that's right besides one another). Friday: aquatic park in Paris, kind of weird being in a big pool fool of people I didn't know, but when I started to try the toboggans... well lets only say that I got a nice little pain in my belly muscles, so much I contracted them. Yes! I was afraid! But fortunately the 1st one that I tried was the worst, so the others I ate them for breakfast (hehehe). After lunch I passed through Lyon Train Station, which has a beautiful architecture with a small Big Ben (I know, they're not alike, but every time I see a big clock I think of Big Ben). Right in front the Bastille Square, with crazy bicycle drivers that would face the cars in a big messy traffic... I would like to see them in Marquês do Pombal round-about... the taxi drivers would kill them! After dinner a little walk around the city and bang! we landed in the National Library of France. Let me say that is a huge work, with a huge garden inside, right beside the Seine (the river). Nice! Saturday: The real weekend was my favourite period because, guess, guess, guess?!?!?! On Saturday I went to Park Astérix. It was awesome! the day was beautiful and hot, so a park with water attractions is quite handy. I can only say, go and visit. I will go again, but earlier this time, to take advantage of every tiny bit. So many things to see, so nice roller coasters (almost had a heart attack in one of them...), so many details, so many water and, and, and the village! The village of my heroes! :D And I actually saw them and took a picture with them (but it was so expensive that I made a "manguito" and quit the idea of buying it), and all the houses, from the chief, from Obélix (with the helmets from some roman soldiers), from the bard, from the fish selling guy and plenty more. It was sooooooooooooo coooooooooooool! The park is divided in different parts, more or less to represent some of the places were the 2 heroes went on their adventures. I just want to go back again. Sunday: A very nice day. We started with the garden around the Museum of Natural History and then tried the museum itself, but it was almost closing, so we will come another time. Visit to the Mosque of Paris and its Tea saloon. Wonderful mint tea and almond desserts. Nham, nham... There I found tea glasses and verveine (doce-lima) to make one of my favourites infusions. Lutèce Arena, a roman theatre discovered in 1869 when they were making a street that is nearby. Before that Mouffetard Street, where students gather around, where there are lots of bars, cheap restaurants, interesting stores... but no portuguese restaurant! In a city where there's more foreign restaurants than french ones, I only found 1 portuguese one, and it was hidden in an alley. And it was closed! :P So we end up in a maroccan restaurant where I tasted "pastilla". Very nice dish, sweet and sower, with lots of almonds . Almost perfect if it was a little bit more salty. :) We also saw the Pantheon and off course Notre Dame is always charming at night. Monday: train station (Montparnasse) and back to Roscoff... I want vacations again!

From left to right and top to bottom: my little ant, carrying my plants. Não é fofinha?!; my aromatic plants (salsa e coentros)... now they're much bigger, but still not big enough to eat them (Cresçam, cresçam!); Cité Internacional; Centre Georges Pompidou, a huge library, well more than that since it has shows, expositions, libraries (books, videos), cafés and you can sit there and work, nice and quietly.

View from Sacré Coeur, behind those trees is the Eiffel Tour... trust me!; Sacré Coeur, very beautiful, but too many people; Quartier des Artistes, just behind Sacré Coeur, on the map you will find Place du Tertre and not the name above, it is known like this because in the XIXth century artistes began to gather and live there. All this is in the Montmartre hill.

The same area; bird in the Place du Tertre; a tavern on the other side of the hill, and a memory of one metro station...

Este post vai em português, por razões que não explico, mas que perceberão. E aqui vai a pergunta: Quantas vezes já sentiram que os outros vos acham estúpidos ou parvos? E que, ao se aperceberem disso, não têm vontade de sequer esclarecer a questão porque não vale simplesmente a pena... Ou porque as pessoas em questão não valem a pena... Esta semana têm me acontecido isso... Serei eu? Serão os outros? Serei eu demasiado arrogante para pensar que elas não me percebem? Ou que eu sei mais que elas? O que é certo é que algumas pessoas aborrecem-me... Outras, ou as mesmas, ainda de x em quando surpreendem-me. Preciso de inspiração! De alguém que me faça ver as coisas diferentes, como não estou habituada. Que me surpreenda, de preferência de um modo agradável. Ou se calhar de uma viagem... de sair daqui...
